Liverpool have developed remarkable goalscoring trend and Mohamed Salah proves it

For all of Liverpool's flaws in recent months, there is one thing Jurgen Klopp's side have continued to get right in matches.

Much has been made about the Reds' unfortunate record of conceding the first goal in contests during the current campaign, but there remains room for optimism when taking a deeper dive into the statistics this season.

Facing an uphill battle to restore parity in many of their fixtures, Liverpool have made a habit of striking late on in games to earn a share of the spoils or all three points. Indeed, Liverpool have found the back of the net a total of 48 times in 2022/23, with the final 14 minutes of matches representing the club's most prolific period by some distance. 14 goals have been scored by the first-team between the 76th and 90th minute this term, with minutes 46-60 (eight goals scored) ranking second on the list.

Evidence of this trend first emerged during the Community Shield against Manchester City, which saw Mohamed Salah convert a penalty in the 83rd minute before Darwin Nunez headed home in stoppage time to grab all the headlines on his first official outing for the club.

A refusal to surrender was again clear to see once again in two of the club's opening three league fixtures, resulting in Salah scoring nine minutes from time against Fulham and Manchester United. The Egyptian's late leveller at Craven Cottage was enough to salvage a point for the Reds but could not prevent the Red Devils from earning an unlikely win on the back of damaging defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

Liverpool's most dramatic moment of the season undoubtedly arrived at home to Newcastle United, who frustrated Klopp's side by wasting time as the clock began to tick down at Anfield. Fabio Carvalho poked home from close range following a corner played into the box to spark scenes of jubilation inside the ground. Five additional minutes had been signalled by the fourth official, though this goal arrived in the 98th minute after further time was permitted in response to the Magpies' gamesmanship.

Two weeks on from breaking Newcastle hearts, an 89th-minute Joel Matip header ensured the Reds' Champions League campaign got up and running at the expense of Ajax. Arriving at a crucial time, having suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss at Napoli in their previous outing, Liverpool showed resolve to grind out a result in front of an expectant home crowd.

Leading the way in the Reds' never-say-die approach to games has been Salah, responsible for eight of the 14 goals Klopp's men have scored in the latter stages of contests. The Egyptian breached Manchester City's backline in the 76th minute of the thrilling Premier League fixture played out between the sides last month, which he followed up by netting against Napoli a fortnight later five minutes before the full-time whistle.

Liverpool's ability to find a way past teams in the dying embers of games hasn't always been a constant of the Klopp era, with only the 2021/22 (35) and 2018/19 (33) campaigns following the same pattern of the most goals arriving between the 76th and 90 minute of matches since the German took charge of the the team seven years ago.
