Liverpool have been 'charmed' by World Cup star as club insiders 'chase transfer'

Liverpool assistant boss Pep Lijnders is apparently “charmed” by Cody Gakpo's impressive performances at the World Cup.

The Reds are currently on a break while the tournament is taking place in Qatar. Seven Liverpool players are away with their respective countries for the tournament, while the rest are enjoying a mini-break before returning to action next month.

Despite Liverpool not playing, they are continuing to be linked with potential new signings. One of them is Gakpo, who is impressing with the Netherlands at the World Cup.

He has scored two goals at the World Cup in his two matches, including a great strike in the Netherlands’ draw with Ecuador. That form, along with his previous showings for PSV Eindhoven, has seen the player linked with a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool have been credited with an interest, as have Manchester United and Leeds. According to Dutch TV presenter Hans Kraay, Reds assistant Lijnders is an admirer of Gakpo and wants the club to sign the player.

“Gakpo is gone. PSV are not going to keep him, and cannot keep him anymore,” Kraay told ESPN.

“Gakpo will soon be playing in the Premier League. The chance that it will be Manchester United is now a lot higher again, because Cristiano Ronaldo has left.

“They have even more money available. At Liverpool, assistant Pepijn Lijnders is charmed by him, so he is chasing Jürgen Klopp. Yes, Gakpo is gone.”
