Liverpool had three players on shortlist before £65m transfer that changed everything

It was back in the summer of 2016 when Jurgen Klopp was first given a glimpse at the talents of Alisson Becker.

In his first pre-season as Liverpool boss, the German had taken the decision to bring in Loris Karius for a relatively modest sum of around £4m after he had impressed the season previous in the Bundesliga with Mainz.

The veteran Alex Manninger was also recruited that same window to provide cover and experience for Karius and Simon Mignolet as Klopp went about reshaping the goalkeeping department he had inherited at Anfield.

Despite Karius and Manninger joining Mignolet on the books that summer, it was a 2-1 defeat to Roma in St Louis, Missouri, in early August, that would give Klopp a real look at what the long-term future held for him in terms of goalkeepers.

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Jude Bellingham but, given their poor start to the season, their hopes of landing the England international are now being met by increasing pessimism.

Understandably so, perhaps. While Jurgen Klopp ’s side have spent most of the past five seasons challenging for Premier League and Champions League titles, with a solitary point and a solitary goal costing them both last season, this year just finishing in the top four is fast becoming their new revised aim.

If Liverpool do enter the race for Bellingham’s signature next year, with Borussia Dortmund previously refusing to sell until 2023, they will find themselves competing with the likes of Real Madrid and Man City. If a successful pursuit comes down to purely financial clout, the Reds are already fighting a losing battle regardless of whether they can call upon Champions League money or not.
