Liverpool can recover vital early ground on Manchester City when they face Manchester United on Monday evening, after Pep Guardiola's side dropped two points against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
The Premier League Champions had won their first two matches of the season and with Jurgen Klopp's side only achieving back-to-back draws, a win against Newcastle would have given the Sky Blues a seven-point advantage over the Reds before the trip to Old Trafford.
But Eddie Howe's rejuvenated Magpies were in no mood to roll over for City and despite falling behind to an early Ilkay Gundogan, they fought back with goals from Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson to turn the match on its head.

When Kieran Trippier dispatched a sublime free-kick into the top corner 10 minutes into the second half, it looked like the Toon were on course to pull off a famous win at St James' Park. But City weren't done and showed their true quality to hit back twice, with goals from new striker Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva, levelling what was a huge entertaining match at 3-3.
Trippier was given a straight red card for a cynical foul on Kevin De Bruyne but saw the decision reduced to yellow card after a VAR review. With no further goals, both sides had to settle for a point, with the champions dropping their first points of the season.
The result puts City five points ahead of Liverpool, but the Reds can now reduce the gap to just two should they triumph against pointless Manchester United at Old Trafford tomorrow evening.
