Liverpool full-time brawl erupts after new signing confirmed

Here is your Liverpool morning digest for Thursday, March 2.

Liverpool full-time brawl erupts

Liverpool U19s set up a mouthwatering UEFA Youth League quarter-final tie with Sporting CP after defeating FC Porto on penalties on an action-packed night at Kirkby.

Jorge Meireles kept his cool to convert a controversial spot-kick early in the first half to hand the visitors a shock lead. However, Melkamu Frauendorf ensured penalties would be needed at the Academy as he drew his side level 10 minutes after the break.

Porto were unable to capitalise on Ben Doak’s missed penalty as Barry Lewtas’ side kept their cool to dispatch their remaining five efforts. Jesus Diaz - the brother of Liverpool star Luis - smashed his effort against the crossbar to hinder his side’s hope of securing European glory this campaign. A further penalty was then dispatched by Luca Stephenson, with a miss from Umaro Cande wrapping it up for the Reds.

Following Liverpool’s 6-5 shoot-out win, tempers boiled on Merseyside as the Porto were irritated by the hosts’ celebrations and their subsequent reaction sparked a mass on-field brawl. The incident resulted in Lewis Koumas, as well as two Porto players, being shown a red card after the full-time whistle.

Liverpool sign young goalkeeper

Liverpool have completed the signing of Kornel Misciur from Hull City.

The Under-16s goalkeeper joins the Reds for an undisclosed fee and will link up with the Academy.

The teenager joined Hull's academy in 2016 following a successful trial, having impressed for local side Burlington Jackdaws, and has featured regularly for the Tigers’ Under-16s this season. Meanwhile, the young Pole also played for the Under-18s against Sheffield United in the Professional Development League back in January, and has been a substitute for them on a number of occasions this season.

And having caught the eye of Liverpool scouts, he has now joined the Reds on a long-term deal.

"I know he was a very highly-rated young player here," head coach Liam Rosenior told Hull Live. "If the deal is right for the football club and they think it's the right thing (then we'll do the deal).

"It shows how good our academy is doing. We have top clubs that want to take some of our players. Good luck to him, it's unbelievable and shows the level of work that's going on in the academy."
