Liverpool forward Sadio Mane to have stadium named after him

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane will have a stadium named after him in Senegal after their 2022 African Cup of Nations triumph.

Mane scored the winning penalty to secure victory over Egypt in the final, condemning teammate Mohamed Salah to final heartbreak.

It was an historic tournament for Senegal after losing in the final two years ago and Mane was a key figure throughout, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists out in Cameroon.

His success with his country has led the 29-year-old to be rewarded with a stadium named after him in his town of birth, Sedhiou.

"Sadio Mane has honoured all of Senegal, the Sedhiou region and the entire Casamance area," mayor of Sedhiou Abdoulaye Diop said.

"I have decided to name the Sedhiou stadium after him.

"In doing so I wish to convey the gratitude of all the sons and daughters of the region towards him.

"He has made all of mankind aware of Bambali and Sedhiou, the region's main town.

"This is a gift that Sadio Mane truly deserves."

The stadium will be completed next year.

Mane returned to Liverpool training on Friday and could feature against Burnley on Sunday.
