Liverpool flight cancelled due to airport staff strike

A Liverpool to Frankfurt Lufthansa flight service has been cancelled due to strike action in Germany.

Ground staff at Lufthansa locations across Germany have been called to a one-day strike by union ver.de. This is set to begin at 1.45am on Wednesday, July 27 and end at 4am on Thursday, July 28.

Lufthansa operates flights from Liverpool to Frankfurt on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The German airline provides international connectivity for the Speke-based airport - after arriving in Frankfurt, passengers can connect with services heading across the globe.

Wednesday's flight from John Lennon Airport to Frankfurt was expected to go ahead. However, a spokesperson for Liverpool John Lennon Airport told the ECHO that the industrial action in Germany means that Wednesday's flight will not go ahead.

The strike in Germany comes amid pay negotiations for around 20,000 employees of logistical, technical and cargo subsidiaries of the airline. The union is calling for a 9.5% pay increase this year and says an offer by Lufthansa earlier this month, which would involve a deal for an 18-month period, falls far short of its demands.

Regarding the strike action, Lufthansa stated on its website: "The union Verdi has called on Lufthansa ground staff throughout Germany to take part in a one-day warning strike. For this reason, there will be major restrictions in the Lufthansa flight schedule on Wednesday, 27 July.

"On Tuesday, 26 July, Lufthansa will publish the cancellations in the system and try to find a solution for affected passengers. If you have left your mobile contact in your booking, Lufthansa will contact them in case of cancellation and rebooking.

"In the current peak travel season, it may take longer to find an adequate rebooking solution. If you do not receive a message from Lufthansa, please check the current status of your booking. Here you can also adjust the rebooking again if you wish. Please also constantly check the status of your flight on lufthansa.com."
