Liverpool FC team hotel targeted by fireworks before crunch Premier League Wolves match

Police were called to Liverpool's team hotel early today after it was targeted by fireworks.

The Titanic Hotel was on the receiving end of the pyrotechnics at around 1.45am today (Sunday). Merseyside Police said they were called after "a couple of fireworks" were let off outside the Regent Road hotel. An empty box of fireworks was found on the pavement nearby.

A police spokesperson told The ECHO that patrols spoke to a man at the scene, who they took home. No arrests were made, but high-visibility patrols were carried out following the incident.

Liverpool FC will be playing Wolves at Anfield today in the last game of the Premier League season. A Liverpool victory would open up the possibility of a title triumph provided Man City, playing at the same time and standing one point clear at the Premier League summit, fail to beat Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa.

This morning's incident, which was initally reported by the Times, was just the latest involving fireworks being let off outside players' hotels before a match. Fireworks were set off outside the Hilton hotel in the early hours of Sunday, May 1, where Chelsea were believed to be staying ahead of the vital clash with Everton in the Premier League at Goodison Park later that day. The Toffee Blues shared a video of the fireworks going off on their Twitter feed.

And last week, fireworks were set off outside Brentford's team hotel in the early hours ahead of their clash with Everton on May 15. Footage showed fireworks light up the sky outside the Innside Hotel in Liverpool city centre at around 3.30am.

Meanwhile Crystal Palace - who Everton beat in dramatic style to secure their Premier League survival on Thursday - spent the night before their trip to Goodison Park in a secret location in a bid to avoid the prospect of being disturbed by fireworks let off by supporters, according to reports.
