Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher's generous gesture to HBO Succession cast

Succession fans can rejoice as the critically acclaimed show returned to UK screens today.

The first episode of season four is now available to watch on Now and Sky Go as we enter the final chapter in the saga of who will succeed Logan Roy as boss of Waystar Royco. The HBO modern classic boasts a Merseyside link as Birkenhead writer Jamie Carragher is a story editor on the show.

The 30-year-old's name has proven to be a talking point amongst fans on social media who have joked whether his footballing namesake has made an unexpected career change. The LFC great is a fan of the show and addressed the confusion after the season three finale.

He joked on Twitter: "Taken aback by the lovely comments & tributes after Succession finale. The fans & viewers are who we do it for." The ECHO spoke to the talented writer, who revealed what it was like to share a name with the legendary defender.

He said: "I can remember in primary school when he wasn't playing so well and I'd get a load of stick in school when he scored two own goals vs Man United. And then, of course, under Rafael Benitez he became one of the best centre backs around so I started to get called the s**t Jamie Carragher. It changed pretty quickly."

The joke is something not lost on his Succession co-writers as he revealed the name prompted the crew to head to the LFC themed Carragher's bar in New York for a celebratory drink after the show filmed its emotional final scenes. Jamie messaged the footballer on Twitter to share how their name played a part in a significant moment in Succession history at the impromptu wrap party.

However, the cast & crew were thrilled when the Sky Sports pundit responded with an amazing gesture. Jamie told the ECHO: "He paid for all our drinks and made sure we were looked after. I think that makes getting called the s**t Jamie Carragher throughout high school all worth it."
