Liverpool FC fans 'processed' before Napoli Champions League match

Liverpool FC fans arriving at the Port of Naples were "processed" by police before last night's Champions League match against Napoli.

LFC fans arriving in Naples for the Reds' group stage match with Napoli were met at the port by a number of local authorities. Fans were "processed" before being allowed to board their coach to the Italian team's stadium just four miles away.

In a video widely circulated on social media, fans trying to board a coach are forced to display both their match ticket and passport. Photographers, wearing what appears to be police accreditation around their necks, take photos and film the fans.

Several armed police officers can also be seen surrounding fans as they queue to board the bus. Peter Rigby, who posted the video, told the ECHO : "There were so many authorities there.

"Municipal police, local police, port authorities. I believe the port authorities gave the club staff a hard time for giving free water and crisps away, and made them move the stalls further away. I believe they also told the ticket officials from LFC they had no right to be operating there."

Liverpool FC put out a warning to travelling fans before the match. In a tweet the club said supporters should avoid a number of areas in the city including the city centre and isolated areas away from the city's port.

The warning said: "Fans should not congregate in public areas and should avoid becoming isolated in areas away from the port area of the city. We strongly recommend you avoid the city centre. If you chose to visit, please beware that you may be targeted for theft, robbery, or assault."

The warning came three years after LFC fans were attacked during their last trip to Naples during the Champions League group stage in September 2019.

The video of the supporters being 'processed' prompted viewers to ask "are these fans or criminals?" Another person added: "Where does the photo and information they take get stored and used for?"

Liverpool FC and UEFA were approached by the ECHO for comment.
