Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp makes Manchester United top four admission

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits that Manchester United deserve a place in the top four if they finish above his side.

The Merseyside club are making a late charge for a Champions League place amid a dismal season. They are a point behind United in fifth although have played a game more.

United go into Saturday’s match with Wolves after back-to-back defeats against Brighton and West Ham. If they fail to win again, it would open the door for Liverpool to leapfrog them for the time being should they beat strugglers Leicester on Monday.

Liverpool found themselves in a similar situation during the 2020/21 season, when a header from goalkeeper Alisson Becker against West Brom helped them clinch third spot amid an injury-riddled campaign.

Klopp said that such unlikely acts can still happen but admitted that should United finish above them and gain a top-four place, it would be well-earned. Referencing Alisson’s header, he told a press conference on Friday: “Miracles happen.

“Again though, it [a top-four finish] was in our hands. Now we have to win but maybe nothing changes. Weeks ago, Champions League was completely out of sight but we have got closer.

“But if Newcastle and Manchester United finish the season above us, they deserve it. It's just about us winning. That's it.”

Klopp sees his side take on Aston Villa and Southampton in the final games of the season after the trip to Leicester. Meanwhile, United take on Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham post-Wolves ahead of the FA Cup final with Manchester City on June 3.
