Liverpool fans spot what James Milner did as Mohamed Salah took penalty against Man City

Liverpool supporters have noticed what midfielder James Milner did in the build-up to Mohamed Salah's penalty in the FA Community Shield on Saturday.

The Reds beat their rivals 3-1 at the King Power Stadium over the weekend to get their season off to a flying start. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Darwin Nunez were among the goals on the day. The right-back opened the scoring just after the 20-minute mark before Pep Guardiola's side drew level on 70 minutes.

But not for long as the Egyptian stepped up and buried a penalty on 83 minutes before Nunez extended the lead in stoppage time. Liverpool fans, though, noticed a clever tactic from Milner as Salah took the spot-kick.

The 36-year-old lurked outside the box before mimicking Salah 's run-up and bursting into the box in perfect timing as it was sent beyond Ederson. Should the City shot-stopper have gotten a hand to it, the midfielder would have been one of the first to the rebound.

The move was branded as 'clever' by some supporters giving him the head start over those standing on the edge of the box.

@FPLEchidna: "It’s just a fun thing to watch but I have mad respect for the attitude that sits behind this - willing to do anything to get an edge. Many players with half the talent of Milner don’t have that."

@YourFPLStation: "He was ready to tuck in the rebound."

@TheFPLPub: "Wow! Good spot! He would've been right there for a follow-up. Do you think that means he knew Mo was aiming right?"

@arfanvilla123: "Milner = Professional."

Milner played just over 15 minutes against his former club on Saturday as he replaced Alexander-Arnold on 74 minutes. He then played the full 90 minutes in the friendly against Strasbourg the following day at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp 's side begin their Premier League campaign on Saturday against newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage. Games against Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Bournemouth will follow.
