Liverpool fans make FSG joke and Anfield point after Real Madrid draw in Champions League

Liverpool have been given the opportunity to exact revenge on Real Madrid after the two European giants were drawn together in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Reds were denied a seventh European Cup back in May when they were edged out 1-0 by Carlo Ancelotti's side in last season's Paris final thanks to a second-half goal from Vinicius Jnr. But now the two football heavyweights, who have won a remarkable 20 European Cups between them, will go head-to-head again after they were paired together in the Round of 16 draw on Monday.

Liverpool fans have been quick to react to the mouth-watering draw on social media.

@Surudo1892 was not surprised by the draw, Tweeting: "Three inevitable things in life: death, tax, and Liverpool clash with Real Madrid while Man City get an easy opponent in the knockout stage of the Champions League."

@rebekkarnold felt that the draw could have been kinder. She Tweeted: "I would be much more confident if the second leg was at Anfield, but must never write us off in the Champions League I’m not going to pretend it’s not the hardest test of the round of 16 though."

Liverpool fan and former ECHO journalist Neil Docking said: "If you want to win the European Cup chances are you’ve got to beat them. So much rather it’s over two legs & we get them at Anfield, with the famous atmosphere rival fans love to pretend doesn’t exist!"

After news broke less than two hour later, claiming that owners FSG were putting the Reds up for sale, @CarefreeEdition said: "Liverpool were drawn against Real Madrid and their owners decided they’d seen enough."

@OkamiOfOdin agreed, writing: "Fenway Sports really saw Champions league draw, seen Liverpool draw Real Madrid and think 'nah you’re alright'."

Liverpool will be at home for the first leg at Anfield, with Los Blancos enjoying home advantage for the second. The Round of 16 ties will be played across February and March, with specific dates yet to be determined.
