Liverpool fans hijack Virgil van Dijk's Instagram post with Cody Gakpo transfer message

Liverpool are progressing towards a deal with PSV Eindhoven to sign Cody Gakpo.

The Reds are keen to bolster their attacking options in the January window with Jurgen Klopp set to be without Luis Diaz until March and Diogo Jota until February and Gakpo is the primary target.

As reported by the ECHO on Monday night, talks between the Reds and PSV have reached an advanced stage, having significantly stepped up in recent days. The ECHO also understands the initial fee will be around the £37m figure with add-ons likely to take the deal well past the £40m mark.

The news, which broke just after Liverpool’s 3-1 Boxing Day win in the Premier League, was greeted with joy by Reds supporters.

And it was following that victory that Virigl van Dijk took to Instagram to celebrate.

He wrote: “Back at it!” but Reds fans reacting to the post couldn’t help but post about Gakpo. Many wrote: “Agent Virgil” while one supporter also asked: “Did you convince Gakpo?”

Speaking after his side’s win at Villa Park, Van Dijk admitted he would like to see new faces added to the ranks of Anfield in the January transfer window - insisting top-quality additions are always welcome at the club.

He said: "Hopefully the injured players can come back soon, and hopefully we can welcome some new players at our football club. We will see. I think that quality is always welcome at Liverpool."
