Liverpool fans have ridiculed Man United's signing of Mason Mount, with the former Chelsea man being handed the number seven shirt at Old Trafford.
The number serves as a reminder of the 7-0 drubbing which the Reds handed down to their rivals back in March. The defeat marked United's low point of last season and fans on social media were quick to mock the announcement, with references to the rout at the forefront.
United's number seven shirt has had a mixed few years, with Memphis Depay, Alexis Sanchez and latterly Cristiano Ronaldo all having occupied the famous jersey to varying degrees of success. Now, United have trusted Mason Mount in the hope of following in the footsteps of the likes of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and George Best.

The Reds had been linked to the signing of Mount themselves, with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai signed instead and it will be interesting to see how their fortunes differ next season.
Upon his signing being announced, Mount said: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.
“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.
“I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”
Liverpool fans will be hoping not, with the need to climb above United, back into contention for Champions League qualification and beyond from next season.
They have not held back on Twitter, with Liverpool fan pages quick to mock the move in a series of posts referencing March's result - here are some of the best:
