Liverpool 'eye' free transfer for Adrien Rabiot after midfielder turned down Manchester United

Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot as his contract in Italy is set to expire at the end of the season.

The Reds look set for a busy summer transfer window as they aim to make key additions to the squad which they hope will catapult them back to the Premier League summit or challenge the title-chasers. This campaign has been out of character by the standards set by Jurgen Klopp's side but they again made a great stride to challenging the Champions League places in their 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

Stefan Bajcetic has continued to flourish in the midfield three but it has become no secret that the department is in need of modernisation. Jude Bellingham has been a name hotly tipped to be added to the ranks.

Reports from Italy, namely Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness, now suggest that the Reds are exploring the possibility of signing Rabiot on a free transfer when his contract expires at the Serie A side in the summer. He joined Juventus in 2019 after leaving PSG and he could look for a move to England.

Maximiliano Allegri's side were handed a points deduction which plunged their season into difficulty and it has been claimed that their chances of keeping the 27-year-old are slim should they miss out on the European places.

Manchester United were close to signing the French international last summer but the move fell through, apparently due to wage demands. The Red Devils agreed a fee to sign the midfielder but ultimately, their efforts were in vain.

His agent and mother, Veronique, has been known to have a fearsome reputation when it comes to negotiations and was previously viewed as a 'stumbling block', as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

In November, on his failed Premier League move Rabiot said: "There was a lot of talk, but I’ve always been focused both in training and in the game.

"The renewal? I don’t know. At the moment, there are other things to think about. I’m focused on the pitch and doing well for the team, to get them out of the difficult and then we’ll see what happens.

“Honestly, I’m not even thinking about the World Cup. I think it’s the same thing for the others. We need to stay focused on the club."
