Liverpool dominate Premier League assist table with top three spots going to Reds

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will insist the three points his team earned at Crystal Palace are more important than any individual statistics, but the trip to Selhurst Park saw the Merseyside club achieve another impressive record.

Three different Reds players occupy the top three spots for assists in the Premier League this season, to go along with the three representatives they have in the top five for goals.

Klopp's side had no players in the top 10 for assists in 2020-21, with Trent Alexander-Arnold their leader with seven last term.

However, not only do the Reds dominate the podium, but all three men in the top spots have already racked up more assists in the first 22 games of the season than any Liverpool player managed in the previous campaign.

Andy Robertson climbed onto the podium with his two assists in the Reds' 3-1 victory, with Virgil van Dijk heading home the Scotland international's corner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doubling the lead from another Robertson assist.

That took him to eight for the season, one behind Mohamed Salah and two behind league-leader Alexander Arnold.

Liverpool also have the two highest scorers in the league, with Salah on 16 and Diogo Jota on 10, while Sadio Mane is joint-fourth with eight top-flight goals this season.

Liverpool took a two-goal lead into the break, but needed goalkeeper Alisson to be in top form to keep Palace quiet.

The London side eventually got their goal in the second period, with Odsonne Edouard converting from close range.

However, after another big save from Alisson, the Reds added to their lead late on when Fabinho tucked away a contentious penalty which was awarded after a VAR check.

"[The] chances he creates, the assists- unbelievable," Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane said of Alexander-Arnold, who registered assists in Liverpool's two previous games against Brentford and Chelsea.

"[He] looks like a good athlete, a decent lad, a brilliant player and we all get excited about attacking players but to get excited about a full-back it’s how the game’s changed over the last few years. The full-backs are so important.

"The assists and positions he gets himself in, he’s brave got a lot of courage - what a brilliant player."

Only three Premier League players registered more than 10 assists last season, with Tottenham striker Harry Kane leading the way on 14.

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne both finished on 12, while Jack Grealish and Son Heung-min ended up with exactly 10 apiece.

The record for the most assists in a Premier League season stands at 20, with Thierry Henry setting the record for Arsenal in 2002-03 and De Bruyne equalling it in 2019-20.
