Liverpool 'deeply saddened' after fan dies in accident before AC Milan Champions League tie

Liverpool have paid tribute to late supporter Philip Dooley, who died in Italy before the club’s Champions League game against AC Milan.

The Reds confirmed that Mr Dooley had passed away earlier on Tuesday morning following a road traffic accident that occurred in the city of Bergamo, north-east of Milan.

The 51-year-old had been in Italy to watch Liverpool in their Champions League opener against AC Milan at the San Siro.

Liverpool said club staff were providing support to other fans affected as they also assisted the local police and consulate.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our supporter Philip Dooley, following a road traffic accident in Bergamo in the early hours of this morning,” Liverpool wrote in an official statement.

“Philip was a lifelong Liverpool fan who had travelled to Italy to be at tonight’s Champions League game against AC Milan.

“Our staff in Milan are working with the local police and consulate, and continue to provide support to other fans impacted by this devastating incident.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone connected to the club are with Philip’s family, friends and fellow supporters at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Philip.”

Liverpool’s players wore black armbands against Milan in tribute to Dooley, while flowers were also laid in his memory outside the San Siro and on his seat ahead of kick-off.
