Liverpool debate: Worst ever signing in club history is clear

Lazar Markovic - £20m totally squandered

Paul Gorst: Sadly, there is plenty of competition for the most dubious of honours, but Lazar Markovic just about scoops the gong here.

Arriving with a reputation as one of the promising youngsters in European football in 2014, Liverpool paid £20m for him as the post-Luis-Suarez-era got underway under Brendan Rodgers.

That fee was a sizable sum for a club like Liverpool eight years ago, but Markovic never came close to justifying the fee or the hype that he came with. In fairness, he was barely out of his teens when he moved but he never seemed to fit in, wherever Rodgers deployed him.

Liverpool paid over £1m for every Premier League appearance he made - all of which came in his first season - and he finally departed in February 2019 having played his last game in May 2015.

Twenty-million pounds totally squandered.

El Hadji Diouf - Transformative signing only brought shame on the club

Joe Rimmer: The signing of El Hadji Diouf was meant to be the arrival of a world class star who would take Liverpool to whole new levels.

With a squad that already boasted Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia among others, Liverpool had finished second and picked up five trophies in the two years before £10m was spent on Lens forward Diouf.

It felt as though Liverpool were in the cusp of greatness but not only did Diouf prove to be a total waste of money (he's the only Liverpool number 9 in history to go a full season without scoring), he was also a total waste of time.

From partying, spitting at fans and generally not giving a toss about Liverpool Football Club, he was a signing who only brought shame on the club.

He now spends his time slagging off club legends such as Carragher and Gerrard, who have both been forthright in their views about the Senegal forward.

Indeed, Gerrard has labelled Diouf the Liverpool signing he 'liked least'. That should be enough to confirm his place as the worst signing in Anfield history.
