Liverpool Council Local Elections results 2023 live as they happen

Liverpool is going to the polls for one of the city's most unpredictable and significant set of elections in decades.

As well as being the first round of all-out elections held in the city - in which every single seat in every single ward is in play - voters face the choice of 85 new councillors across 64 newly drawn wards across all four corners of Liverpool.

Many of these wards will be held by just a single councillor in a change to the previous system where each ward was run by three councillors. The changes mean these elections will be highly unpredictable.

Labour will be hoping to retain power under new group leader Liam Robinson but may lose votes after a run of recent scandals. They will face challenges in the south from the Liberal Democrats who will be keen to add significantly to their number,

The smaller ward boundaries could also be good news for the large number of independent candidates standing in these elections as they will need fewer votes in order to get over the line. This could potentially provide some shocks.

To add to the drama, Liverpool is also scrapping the role of city mayor with current incumbent Joanne Anderson not seeking re-election and set to leave the council altogether after this week. The council will revert to a leader and cabinet model after these votes.
