Liverpool could repeat proven transfer strategy to solve midfield problem

Liverpool's expected midfield overhaul could take them back to Benfica next season, according to latest reports.

Jurgen Klopp is all too aware of the need to overhaul his engine room in the near future, with Jordan Henderson and James Milner both in their 30s and Naby Keita in the final year of his contract. The Reds have been consistently linked with Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, but there are alternative targets in the frame.

Portuguese outlet UOL have already claimed that the Reds will revisit the possibility of signing Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes, even though the 24-year-old has only made the switch to the Premier League from Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

That's because the Reds' Sporting Director Julian Ward has a close relationship with the agent Jorge Mendes. But if a deal for Nunes is simply too difficult to agree, there is another name currently in the mix.

According to UOL, the Reds are also keeping a close eye on Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The 21-year-old Argentinian has made an immediate impact for the Eagles after moving from Buenos Ares club River Plate in the summer. Fernandez already has three goals to his name in 12 appearances for the Lisbon club.

Should he continue to make rapid progress in the Primeira League, Fernandez could follow former Benfica striker Darwin Nunez to Anfield, with another Liverpool star of the future passing through the Eagles before landing on Merseyside.
