Here is your Liverpool FC morning digest for Monday, September 19.
Four free transfer chances for next summer
Liverpool were working hard right until the end of the summer window, bringing in Arthur Melo on a season-long loan come deadline day. But injuries to key players and a poor start to the new season mean eyes are already looking ahead - particularly with the ageing core of James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Mohamed Salah.
As well as reported marquee signings, however, summer 2023 sees a host of top European talent coming to the end of their current contracts, thus making them available for free.
The Reds can start negotiating contracts with said players from January 1, and here at the ECHO we’ve had a look at four of the best options who could come to Anfield for free next summer.
Joao Gomes throws Reds move into doubt
Liverpool target Joao Gomes has committed his future to Flamengo by signing a new contract until 2027.
The 21-year-old has courted interest from a host of Premier League clubs after breaking into the Flamengo first team and helping them to the final of the Copa Libertadores. The Reds were widely reported to be monitoring the midfielder's situation in Brazil, with his original deal running out in 2025 and potentially paving the way for a move next summer.
But now the Rio de Janeiro-born player looks to have settled any rumours of a move away - at least for the time being - by signing a new long-term deal. Gomes originally added fuel to the fire by admitting: "Liverpool are a team I’d play for."
