Liverpool could capitalise on Chelsea transfer 'fire sale' as Blues under FFP scrutiny

Liverpool could potentially move for up to three Chelsea players this summer as the threat of FFP sanctions hang over Stamford Bridge.

The Reds head into the summer transfer window in need of some serious investment. Jurgen Klopp's side have struggled to compete this season and look set to miss out on Champions League football next term.

Liverpool languish down in eighth position in the Premier League with just nine games to be played and 12 points separating them and Manchester United in fourth. Plans are already being put in place for new additions given that a number of the current squad are out of contract in the summer.

One man who will not be arriving at Anfield is Borussia Dortmund and England sensation Jude Bellingham. The Reds have pulled out of the race to sign him due to concerns over the price they might have to pay.

A few alternatives have already been identified including Chelsea pair Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount. According to the Evening Standard, the Reds are also eyeing a swoop for defender Levi Colwill, who has been impressing on loan at Brighton.

Whilst the Blues will not be keen on selling three of their academy graduates to Liverpool, they might have no other choice given their previous big spending under new owner Todd Boehly. It is suggested that a ‘ fire sale’ could be on the cards to ensure that Chelsea abide by FFP regulations following a splurge of more than £600million since the American took control at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues insist that they fully comply with the rules but UEFA are keeping a close eye on their spending to ensure that is the case. Failure to qualify for the Champions League could see Chelsea's financial situation worsen - further boosting Liverpool’s potential moves for Mount, Gallagher and Colwill.

Liverpool do face competition for the trio, though. Brighton and Manchester City are noted to be interested in Colwill, whilst Man Utd are admirers of Mount.

Elsewhere, Gallagher has been identified by Newcastle as a potential recruit next season as they turn their attentions to a Champions League campaign. Klopp has already spoken out on his side’s potential business in the upcoming window after a move for Bellingham was ruled out as he highlighted the complexities involved in transfer dealings.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s showdown with Leeds at Elland Road, he said: “You have to work with what you have. You wouldn't say as a five-year-old at Christmas you want a Ferrari.

“Whatever we need and want we try absolutely everything to get it but there are moments when you have to accept it's not possible and step aside and do different stuff."
