Liverpool Champions League route clearer after Man United win and Newcastle draw

Liverpool's quest for a top-four place in the Premier League became clearer as Manchester United beat Wolves 2-0 at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial's first-half strike opened the scoring at Old Trafford with Alejandro Garnacho coming off the bench to make sure of the victory in added time by netting his side's second goal.

The result leaves the Red Devils four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool having now played the same amount of games. It means Jurgen Klopp's side face an uphill task to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro both went close for Erik ten Hag's team during the second period but it was Garnacho, who has recently returned from a lengthy injury lay-off, who netted their all-important second goal.

United have now played the same amount of games as Liverpool, 35, and drew level on 66 points with third-placed Newcastle United following their triumph over Wolves. Earlier in the day the Magpies drew 2-2 with Leeds United at Elland Road.

Liverpool's remaining Premier League fixtures: Leicester City (A), Aston Villa (H), Southampton (A).

Manchester United's remaining Premier League fixtures: Bournemouth (A), Chelsea (H), Fulham (H).

Newcastle United's remaining Premier League fixtures: Brighton (H), Leicester City (H), Chelsea (A).
