Liverpool chairman tips Todd Boehly to be "excellent owner" at Chelsea after private chat

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has backed Todd Boehly to be an "excellent owner" as his takeover of Chelsea nears completion.

The American led a consortium that was among a host of parties looking to purchase the Blues and has won the race with the Government green lighting the sale.

Chelsea have been hampered by sanctions whilst a buyer is found, which has resulted in the departures of several players as they were unable to negotiate new deals.

Boehly is already a co-owner of Major League Baseball (MLB) side Los Angeles Dodgers. He's been able to preside over success in California, seeing the Dodgers win the World Series in 2020. He will be targeting similar exploits with Chelsea and has been discussing matters with a Liverpool chief.

The 48-year-old will be tasked with giving Thomas Tuchel the tools to overhaul Manchester City and Liverpool whilst any new owner was also expected to redevelop Stamford Bridge.

Werner told the Athletic : “John Henry and I have known and admired Todd from his association with the Los Angeles Dodgers (FSG is a fellow owner in Major League Baseball (MLB) at the Boston Red Sox). I’ve had a couple of conversations with him in the last week. He was just picking my brain. I think he will be good for Chelsea. I know they are working right now on a stadium solution. I think he will prove to be an excellent owner.”

Boehly is poised to hand Tuchel a £200m summer transfer budget. The Blues were tipped as potential title contenders but fell away around Christmas. The likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen will now leave on frees leaving big holes at the back.

A government spokesman has said on the sale of the club: "Late last night the UK Government reached a position where we could issue a licence that permits the sale of Chelsea Football Club. Following the sanctioning of Roman Abramovich, the Government has worked hard to ensure Chelsea Football Club has been able to continue to play football.

"But we have always been clear that the long-term future of the club could only be secured under a new owner. Following extensive work, we are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual.

"We will now begin the process of ensuring the proceeds of the sale are used for humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting victims of the war."
