Liverpool centre-back continues impressive season as England given World Cup boost

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah's impressive season continued as he helped England kick off their U20 World Cup campaign with victory.

Quansah featured for the full 90 minutes as a first-half goal from Tottenham Hotspur's Dane Scarlett earned the Young Lions a 1-0 win in their Group E opener against Tunisia in La Plata in Argentina on Monday night.

The 20-year-old Reds centre-back was close to doubling the lead before half-time when his far-post header from a corner was beaten out by Tunisia goalkeeper Dries Arfaoui.

England - who have been hampered by a number of players not being released by their respective clubs - stand second in the group after Uruguay thumped Iraq 4-0 later in the evening, with the top two guaranteed progress to the knockout stages in the 24-team tournament. The four best third-placed teams will also qualify.

Selection for the Young Lions continued a season of progress for Quansah, who made 16 appearances for Bristol Rovers when on loan at the League One side during the second half of the campaign, and a fortnight ago signed a new contract at Liverpool.

England U20s are coached by Ian Foster, who hails from Whiston and started his playing career at Liverpool's Academy. He began working with the national team coaching set-up in 2017.

Quansah will be hoping for further minutes as England look to seal their place in the last 16 when they take on Uruguay on Thursday, again at the Estadio Unico Diego Armando Maradona in La Plata.
