Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said it was selfish of Mohamed Salah to discuss his contract situation after the game against Southampton. Carragher believes Salah’s contract situation does not demand any attention at this point, as the focus should solely be on Liverpool’s push for the Premier League title.
What Did Mohamed Salah Say About His Liverpool Contract?
Salah, 32, delivered another Man of the Match performance on Sunday, as Liverpool registered a 3-2 comeback victory over Southampton in the Premier League. The former AS Roma winger scored two goals in the second half (65′, 83′ (pen)) to help the Reds extend their lead to eight points at the top of the Premier League rankings.
After the game, Salah spoke to the press at St. Mary’s Stadium, and inevitably reporters quizzed him about his contract situation. Salah, who sees his deal expires on June 30, 2025, said (via Sky Sports):
“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club. I’m probably more out than in.
“You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end, it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”
Jamie Carragher Calls Mohamed Salah ‘Selfish’
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher criticized Salah for discussing his contract situation in the mixed box, saying he should not have made such comments ahead of a crucial week for Liverpool.
Carragher said:
“I must say, I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. That interview last night after the game when it comes out. Liverpool have got Real Madrid midweek and they’ve got Manchester City at the weekend. That’s the story for Liverpool right now.
“Mo Salah, we’re all aware, certainly the local reporters are in Liverpool, that in the seven years he’s been at the football club, he’s stopped in the mixed zone twice. Which is his right which is absolutely fine but he decided to stop for the third time away at Southampton on the back of winning the game and putting that out.”
He added:
“The most important thing for Liverpool Football Club this season is not the future of Mo Salah, not the future of Virgil van Dijk and not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League, that is more important than any of those players.”
“And if he continues to put comments out and his agent keeps putting cryptic tweets out, that’s selfish. That’s thinking about themselves and not the football club.”
Liverpool will welcome Real Madrid to Anfield Stadium in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday (November 27) before hosting Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday (December 1).
