Saturday's Merseyside derby saw Liverpool again drop points in the Premier League as familiar problems were on show for all to see.
I think we’re a little bit unbalanced at the moment, particularly due to having so many key midfielders injured. The manager went for it against Everton with a very youthful midfield but it just didn’t come off. We had 20 odd attempts and, in any other game, one of those goes in and you win. It's a draw that feels like a defeat.
Darwin Nunez had four opportunities and nearly scored from the most difficult one, it was a fantastic save in the end from Jordan Pickford. As long as Nunez is getting in those positions, as a forward, he will soon start scoring. The season hasn’t started for Mo Salah and he is a worry more than most. He normally comes out the blocks flying and would have scored six or seven goals by now and it’s not happening. That’s hurt us.

Some have suggested this could be a season of transition for Liverpool before being in a stronger position at the start of the next campaign. At the moment, you would say that is very possible. Part of the problem is that we were the nearest team to do the quadruple and came so near but yet so far. To replicate that is asking so much, it really is. Mentally, that may have become a bit of an issue for the players. That was never going to happen again this season but you obviously still strive for it.
In terms of what is going wrong at this moment in time, they’re not scoring enough goals and we can defend better. There are too many injuries and players haven’t started the season right. It’s hard when you lose form, to get it back. But they will do that. There are three or four players who have struggled as they have set the standards so high and it’s hard to continue that for all of your career.
It’s just problematic when that happens at the same time with different players. You can sometimes carry one player, maybe two, but you can’t carry three or four. I’m not saying we are carrying them currently but we need them and they are so influential for us. They are the reason why we have been so successful.
We’re off the pace but we’re only six games in and have still got to play the top teams, which become key matches. We left ourselves in the difficult position of needing to win a lot of those big six contests near the end of last season due to drawing the opening head-to-head encounters, and that's something we must try and avoid a repeat of this time around.
Free-scoring Haaland is a problem Liverpool have no control over
Erling Haaland was on the scoresheet again for Manchester City at the weekend, taking his tally to 10 goals in the opening six league games of the season. Much has been made about the damage he is going to cause to opponents in the coming months but, regardless of how dangerous he is and the impact he is clearly having, City have still dropped four points.
Liverpool can’t worry about them, we just have to worry about ourselves. Haaland is going to score a lot of goals but he can’t do it every single game and City will have off days over the course of the season.
