Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s Newcastle United 'obsession' revealed with intriguing question

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been “obsessed” with Newcastle United since the Saudi-backed takeover last year. Bold claims from Football Insider who quote sources, suggest the Liverpool manager is fascinated by the Magpies and their progress under Eddie Howe.

Before the takeover, Newcastle were Premier League also-rans who appeared destined for relegation. Fast forward to the present and United - sitting above Liverpool in the league - are European contenders.

While an upwards trajectory appeared inevitable, the speed of Newcastle’s transformation has taken everyone - including Toon supporters - by surprise. There was suggestion of “big six” interference regarding the Saudi-backed deal and, just over a year on, the Magpies are posing a serious threat to the Premier League elite.

The piece reports that Klopp regularly discusses Newcastle and their plans in the transfer market. A recent outburst from the Reds boss saw him take a public swipe towards the new regime at St James’ Park.

"What can Liverpool do? We cannot act like them (Newcastle and Manchester City)," Klopp said. "It is not possible. Not possible. It is just clear, and again, you know the answer.

“There are three clubs in world football (City, PSG and Newcastle) who can do what they want financially. It's legal and everything, fine, but they can do what they want. I heard now that, at Newcastle, somebody (Dan Ashworth) said, 'there is no ceiling for this club'. Yes! He is right. He is absolutely right. There is no ceiling for Newcastle. Congratulations, but other clubs have ceilings."

Klopp taking note of Ashworth’s recent interview shows he is keeping tabs on the situation at Newcastle. An unusual obsession raises the question: could the 55-year-old take charge in the North East one day?

As it stands, few supporters would be willing to oust Howe given the job he is doing. Dragging the Magpies from second bottom to third has grabbed the headlines but his ability to transform exiled players into standout performers has captivated Tyneside the most.

If anything, interest from a Champions League manager proves Newcastle are becoming a threat to the established heavyweights - and the best is yet to come. The fairytale ride is only just beginning at St James’ Park, with plenty of memories for fans - and Klopp - still to experience.
