Liverpool boost as Alexis Mac Allister’s red card overturned after successful appeal

The Football Association have overturned Alexis Mac Allister’s red card after Liverpool launched an appeal.

The Argentine midfielder was dismissed during Saturday’s win over Bournemouth for a tackle on Ryan Christie.

Liverpool’s appeal has been ruled successful, which will allow Mac Allister to feature in Sunday’s trip to Newcastle. An initial three-game ban had also suspended him for the upcoming games against Wolves and Aston Villa.

An FA statement read: “An independent regulatory commission has removed Alexis Mac Allister’s three-match suspension following a claim of wrongful dismissal.”

Jurgen Klopp made clear his view on Mac Allister’s red card after the 3-1 win at Anfield.

“I’ve seen it back,” said the Liverpool boss. “I think the number of times I’ve been asked about it, it’s worth discussing again which we will probably do.

"Alexis told me he touched him, but not really. If you have a list of points to have a penalty beside contact; no other boxes are ticked. If it was a yellow card it wouldn’t have been overturned but because it’s red card and there’s contact VAR isn’t overturning it... blah, blah.

“The punishment being with 10 men for 40 minutes is already punishment itself. I don’t know we have to talk to the authorities. We saw harsher challenges which were not red cards.”
