Liverpool bid 'rejected' as Luis Diaz 'second choice' transfer claim made

Days remain in the January transfer window and Liverpool are closing in on their first bit of business.

Ahead of Monday's deadline, the Reds are looking to complete a deal worth a potential £49m for Porto winger Luis Diaz.

But Diaz is just one of a number of names linked with a move to Anfield, so here's a round-up of all the latest transfer gossip from around the globe.

Who?

Matheus Cunha

Where?

AS

What?

Liverpool had an offer for Matheus Cunha rejected by Atletico Madrid, if reports from Spain are to be believed.

The Reds are closing in on. a deal for Porto winger Luis Diaz, but it has been claimed the Colombia international wasn't their first choice.

Outlet AS says the La Liga club rebuffed attempts from Liverpool to sign Cunha this window as they have 'no intention to sell' and Diego Simeone 'has plans' for the player.

It goes on to say that the Reds' move for Luis Diaz has almost been 'celebrated' by those at Atletico Madrid as they've 'overcome the first assault' for Cunha.

However, it's worth noting Liverpool's pursuit of Diaz is no last ditch attempt to bolster their squad and Diaz is in fact a target the club intended to move for in the summer.

The dramatic move in January is a result of Tottenham's approach for the player, a clear indicator that Diaz is the highest priority for the club. There is nothing to suggest the 25-year-old is a second or third choice option behind the likes of Cunha.

Who?

Raphinha

Where?

90min

What?

West Ham are interested in making a 'late swoop' for Leeds United's Raphinha, according to reports.

90min claim the Brazil international is 'interesting' the Hammers as they consider testing Leeds' resolve with a late swoop.

Liverpool have also been heavily linked with the 25-year-old and their interest in Raphinha is well documented.

However, he'd certainly cost a significant fee and there's been widespread reports he could extend his deal at Elland Road, making a deal even more difficult.

It seems the Reds have opted to sign Luis Diaz instead, as they close in on the potential £49m move, which could open the door for the likes of West Ham to move for Raphinha.

Who?

Paulo Dybala

Where?

El Nacional

What?

Liverpool may face competition if they are indeed interested in Juventus star Paulo Dybala.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Argentina international this week as reports surfaced he is yet to sign a new deal with the Serie A club.

Dybala could be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, which appears to have alerted a number of Europe's top clubs.

Spanish outlet El Nacional says Barcelona's hierarchy have made it a priority to sign the 28-year-old and the player has 'already given his approval' to join the Catalan giants.

It goes on to highlight Liverpool's interest in Dybala as the two clubs are set to battle it out for the player.

While Liverpool have previously shown they're willing to sign players at the height of their prime, as opposed to talented young prospects, the likelihood is Dybala would demand significant wages.

The Reds have a contract situation of their own to resolve with Mohamed Salah, which will undoubtedly be the clubs priority.
