Liverpool and Man Utd have already given Thomas Tuchel a boost ahead of key Chelsea fixtures

Chelsea fans might experience something of a Club World Cup hangover, but the team will not, according to the data.

Chelsea were crowned Club World Cup champions on Saturday after their 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi.

But data suggests that any fans worrying that the extra games and travelling might affect the club’s prospects this season are doing so needlessly.

Three English clubs have competed in the Club World Cup since it adopted its new structure in 2005 on four different occasions - Liverpool (2005), Manchester United (2008), Chelsea themselves in 2012, and Liverpool (2019).

And the omens are good for THomas Tuchel's side if you look at what happened after those tournaments.

All four of those sides went on to win at least one trophy that season, all of them qualified for the Champions League, and all four won their next three games.

Manchester United were the most successful of England’s Club World Cup participants.

After winning the competition in 2008, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to win the Premier League and EFL Cup, reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the final of the Champions League, which they lost to Barcelona.

Liverpool’s 2019 victory in the Club World Cup was followed by their first league title in 30 years.

Chelsea’s loss in the 2012 Club World Cup saw them finish third in the league but win the Europa League, while Liverpool’s 2005 Club World Cup loss saw them also finish third but win the FA Cup.

It is the next three matches that will be of interest to head coach Thomas Tuchel and the fans though. And on all four previous occasions the English side has gone on to win their next three matches after returning from the Club World Cup.

Chelsea face Crystal Palace at the weekend, before a Champions League round of 16 clash with Lille and then a Premier League game with Leicester City.
