Liverpool among top 10 English cities with highest demand for women's football

The interest in the women's game has continued to grow every year and 2022 saw it reach even greater heights after the success of the Lionesses at the Euros.

Sarina Wiegman's side overcame their opponents Germany 2-1 at Wembley in July last year to clinch England's first major trophy since 1966. In the months that followed, Beth Mead was named the BBC's Sports Personality of the year and she was one of four members of the squad to be recognised on the New Year's honours list.

As the women's game continues to gain interest, analysts at Footy Accumulators have identified which English cities have seen the biggest increase in the demand for women's football and Liverpool is among them.

Using keyword software, they identified which cities have seen the greatest year-on-year search increases for the term 'women's football'. Bradford ranked first on the list, with searches increasing by 143%.

Liverpool ranked sixth, level with Manchester, with both cities seeing an increase of 86%, behind Newcastle, London, York and Bristol. The research shows the north of the country has seen the highest interest, with only four of the top 10 cities with the largest search increases located in the south. Other cities on the list include Birmingham, Plymouth, Hull, Sunderland and Southampton.

Liverpool is home to two Women's Super League clubs in Liverpool and Everton, as well as National League sides Merseyrail Ladies and Liverpool Feds. Two members of the Euro-winning Lionesses squad were also born on Merseyside in Alex Greenwood and Nikita Parris.

Greenwood currently plays her football at Manchester City, having previously played for both Liverpool and Everton. She's also represented French giants Lyon and rivals Manchester United. Parris, who also currently plays in Manchester with United, came through Everton's centre of excellence.
