Liverpool ace Thiago makes Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards burst into song on live TV

Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards hilariously bellowed Thiago's chant as he produced another masterful display for Liverpool in their 2-0 victory over Villarreal.

The Spaniard is one of the most in-form midfielders in Europe and ran the show once again as the Reds secured a 2-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night. As well as controlling the tempo from the centre of the Anfield pitch, Thiago went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich star saw his thunderous drive from well outside the area cannon back off the post as the visitors managed to cling on until the interval. Liverpool would go on to claim a commanding aggregate lead thanks to an own-goal from Pervis Estupinan and a strike from Sadio Mane.

Over in the CBS Sports studio, there was yet another amusing moment involving pundits Carragher and Richards as they were shown the highlights from the first half. Rather than opting for conventional analysis of Thiago's powerful effort, they simply burst into song and began dancing as they called out his chant, which the Anfield faithful have put to the tune of 'Cuba' by the Gibson Brothers.

The two former England internationals roared: "Thiago... Thiago Alcantara!" It certainly was a performance worthy of a song and the 31-year-old was duly named Player of the Match at full-time. He could also scoop the Player of the Week award if he beats Villarreal defender Juan Foyth, Real Madrid striker Benzema and Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva in the voting.

That being said, Thiago was keen to stress the "best thing" about Liverpool's entertaining victory was the "team performance" rather than his sublime individual showing.

Is Thiago the best midfielder in the Premier League? Have your say in the comments!

"We have to recognise that we are playing a semi-final of the Champions League against a tough team like Villarreal," he said. "We have to have patience but at the end to be ourselves, that's the key.

"I really enjoyed the team performance, that for me is the best thing, because we put our level as high as possible and we delivered today. It's not just about patience, we try to figure out where the gaps [are]. We tried in the first half, we created a lot of chances [and] created a lot of opportunities and in the second half it came."

Liverpool will aim to defend - and build on - their 2-0 aggregate advantage as they travel to Villarreal for the second leg next Tuesday.
