Diogo Jota scored twice to keep Liverpool’s hopes of an unlikely Premier League title alive.
Towards the end of both halves, the Portuguese hit two instinctive finishes in an impressive outing for new signing, Luis Diaz.
Making his full debut, Diaz instantly looked at home. While a goal eluded him, the forward has already appeared to have struck up a promising partnership with Andy Robertson on the left-hand side and twice went close with shots after searing counters.
While there is little to suggest either Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino need replacing right away, Diaz’s interplay with Jota, who scored the 100th goal of his club career with his opener, offered signs of a hugely promising future when the time comes to fully refresh Jurgen Klopp’s attack.
Brendan Rodgers had called for a reaction from his Leicester side after their humiliating loss to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and, for large parts, he got one. Still, their lack of threat on the attack largely made this a comfortable win for the home side.
Both goals came from Leicester’s inability to clear their lines from corners, with Jota pouncing on loose balls either side of the interval.
Liverpool could well have added to their tally before, particularly upon Mohamed Salah’s introduction, but Kasper Schmeichel came to the visitors’ rescue.
Nine points off of City, Liverpool aren’t going away quietly.
