ICYMI: Indigenous Affairs minister on News Breakfast

The Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney, was on this morning.

She's already said she's confident the nation is ready for a referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

It will be about entrenching in the Constitution a permanent Aboriginal body, recognising Aboriginal people in the Constitution, but it would also be about practical things that will be affecting the lives of First Nations people on the ground.

A referendum is yet to have full buy-in from the Greens, Liberals or Nationals, a key concern being that there is not a clear picture on how the body would look and operate.

But Ms Burney said:

I understand that there is debate around detail. But when you have a look at the fact that there has been 10 years of expert advisory groups, of parliamentary groups, of discussions with constitutional lawyers, of discussions with First Nations people, there is a lot of information already in the public arena.

A teen killed, four injured in attack while tubing down a US river

A 17-year-old has died and four people were seriously hurt while tubing down a Wisconsin river.

They were all on the Apple River on a Saturday afternoon when attacked, and were tubing with two different groups of people.

Police have a 52-year-old man in custody, with county sheriff Scott Knudson telling the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

"Thank goodness a witness had taken a photo of him," Mr Knudson said.

"Another witness located him at the exit of the tubing area, where he was taken into custody."

The victims were either in their teens or early 20s.

Some thoughts from you on that future gas price pain...

The gas prices for us will go up because we’ll be exploited. Demands for gas o/s means we will export more and charge us more for what’s left. Just another example of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

Russian strikes 'most brutal' of war

In an update from Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian strikes in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv were "the most brutal shelling of the entire period of the full-scale war."

In his nightly address, he said residential buildings and schools were among those hit.

One of Ukraine's wealthiest men, Oleksiy Vadatursky, was also killed in the latest shelling along with his wife.

A presidential adviser said Mr Vadatursky was specifically targeted because he owned one of the largest farm groups in the country, a key person in the region and a major employer.

That the nation's median property value has dropped by 2 per cent since the beginning of May, to $747,182.

And it's expected to continue to worsen with interest rates still going up.

Starting last night, that now includes those on student visas, as well as cruise ships.

Coming up: A plan for voluntary assisted dying in the Territories

Every state has laws allowing voluntary euthanasia for terminally ill adults — but that's *not* the case in the Territories.

That's likely to change now, with a private member's bill going to Federal Parliament today.

The ACT and NT would then get to legislate — so why haven't they done it before?

In 1996, John Howard's government introduced a ban, giving the Commonwealth veto power.

First up: Australia's gas outlook is 'concerning'

That's according to the consumer watchdog — they're warning about the risk of gas shortages and price rises next year.

"The outlook for 2023 is very concerning and is likely to place further upward pressure on prices, which could result in some commercial and industrial users no longer being able to operate," the ACCC's report said.

How to fix the problem?

The ACCC has recommended the federal government pull the so-called "gas trigger" and formally determine if 2023 will be a shortfall year.

It allows the government to ensure there's enough gas left for use in Australia.

News Australia is searching for

The Euros: That's the news lighting up Europe this morning — England has clinched the Women's Euros, beating Germany 2-1 on home soil.

One more thing

Two pioneers have died overnight — NBA great Bill Russell and actor Nichelle Nichols.

Their common ground? Paving the way for black people in their industries.

Russell anchored a Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 championships in 13 years — the last two as the first Black head coach in any major US sport — and marched for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr.

And Nichols broke barriers for black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek television series.
