'Terrorist attacks' will be 'held accountable', Brazil judge says

The office of Brazil's crusading Justice Alexandre de Moraes (who has been a thorn in the side of Bolsonaro and his supporters), was ransacked by the occupiers, according to social media.
Justice Moraes said in response that: "Despicable terrorist attacks on democracy and republican institutions will be held accountable."
And the city's governor Ibaneis Rocha said he had fired his top security official, Anderson Torres, who was previously Bolsonaro's justice minister.
The solicitor general's office said it had filed a request for the arrest of Mr Torres.
Car stolen with sleeping toddler inside in Melbourne's suburbs

The concerning incident happened in Chelsea, in Melbourne's outer south-east.
The ABC's Yvette Gray has more:
"In a social media post police say a parent parked their car at the Chelsea shops yesterday and left their young child asleep in the back seat as they didn't want to wake them.
The parent kept the air conditioning running and left the car unattended for a few minutes, but during this time, a thief climbed inside and drove off.
Police say it appears the thief soon realised there was a child in the vehicle and stopped, leaving the toddler on a street before driving off again in the stolen car.
Minutes later the child was found uninjured, wandering along a busy road. Police say it's a timely reminder to never leave young children unattended in a car."
What will today's protests mean for Brazil?

Dr Raul Sanchez Urribarri, from La Trobe University, says it's a "tumultuous time" for Brazil's government:
"Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters invade Congress and the Supreme Court, in an effort to destabilise the country’s democratic institutions at a time when Lula is starting his mandate.
The consequences of this event are still to be seen, but herald a very tumultuous time for Brazilian democracy in the months and years ahead.
Bolsonaro hasn’t explicitly recognised his election loss (and is currently travelling). His side seems focused on delegitimising Lula’s government from the start."
Mexico's president labels Brazil 'coup attempt' as 'reprehensible'

He tweeted that President Lula was "not alone" and had the support of other nations:
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the US condemns any effort to undermine the country, adding: "Brazil's democracy will not be shaken by violence."

Brazilian news outlet GloboNews says security forces have regained control of the three buildings.
It comes hours after supporters of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro invaded buildings in the capital, Brasilia.

NFL player Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest on the field this week in confronting scenes — now he's sent out his first picture from hospital.
The Buffalo Bills player was watching as his side made an impressive touchdown from the opening kickoff — and kept the momentum up to beat the New England Patriots, 35-23.
BREAKING: Brazil's president calls protests 'barbarism'

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has just spoken about those protests in the capital, declaring federal security intervention until the end of January.
He said all those involved would be found and punished, labelling the protests as "barbarism".

Flooding peak still to come in NSW's west

Let's head back home for a bit — the NSW State Emergency Service says the peak in the Darling River at Menindee is expected in the coming days.
The town and surrounding areas have faced prolonged flooding, with the peak still upstream of Menindee.
SES spokesman Andrew McCullough says the area remains under an emergency warning:
"We've had about 30 properties inundated with floodwater and so we will continue to support the community in the coming weeks as the flood peak reaches Menindee and then hangs around for some time."

Thousands have bypassed security in Brazil, local media estimates

Protesters invaded all three buildings, which are connected through the vast Three Powers square in Brasilia.
Images on TV channel GloboNews showed protesters roaming the presidential palace, many of them wearing green and yellow, the colours of the flag that have also come to symbolize the Bolsonaro government.
Bolsonaro supporters have been protesting against Lula's electoral win since October 30 — blocking roads, setting vehicles on fire and gathering outside military buildings, asking armed forces to intervene.
Bolsonaro, who flew to the US ahead of Lula's inauguration last week, has not yet condemned or commented on the ongoing situation.

Brazil scenes 'eerily reminiscent' of US Capitol attack

Here's more on the situation in Brazil from the ABC's Carrington Clarke:
"The supporters broke through a blockade set up by security forces and invaded major public buildings in the capital, Brasilia.
Video shows large groups, many clad in the iconic yellow and green jersey of Brazil's national football team, inside the buildings in scenes eerily reminiscent of the attack on the US Capitol just two years ago.
A key difference though is that power has already formerly been handed to Luiz Inacio Lula Silva.
Lula won a close election last year but many Bolsonaro supporters have refused to acknowledge the result."
BREAKING: Bolsonaro supporters invade Congress building in Brazil's capital

Supporters of Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro broke through a blockade set up by security forces and invaded ministries and the Congress building in Brasilia, according to video obtained by Reuters from Bolsonaro-related groups and footage from local broadcasters.
Protesters also invaded the parking lot of the Planalto Palace, according to CNN Brasil.
Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula Silva is currently on an official trip in Sao Paulo state.
Albanese arriving in WA amid flood emergency

Anthony Albanese has urgently flown to Western Australia, amid the flood emergency that's already caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
The ABC's Sam Wilkinson has more:
"The Prime Minister has arrived in WA and will tour the devastated Kimberley region alongside the state's premier Mark McGowan.
Since ex-tropical cyclone Ellie dumped record rainfall last week, thousands of homes have been inundated, vital roads have been damaged, and 233 people have been rescued.
Authorities are continuing to urge people in the Fitzroy River Catchment area to take action, with flooding expected to peak in some downstream communities today.
The defence force is on the ground, and additional supplies will arrive in Broome from tomorrow."
