The United Nations rights chief called Friday for an immediate ceasefire in Syria to help facilitate bringing aid to all victims of the region's devastating earthquakes. The death toll from Monday's catastrophic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria surpassed 23,000 on Friday. Follow FRANCE 24's blog to see how the day's events unfolded. All times are Paris time (GMT+1).

Officials and medics said more than 23,000 people were killed by Monday's succession of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, with the death toll in Turkey alone surpassing 20,000.

Hopes of finding more survivors were rapidly fading as rescuers continued to search through the rubble, with freezing conditions now threatening the lives of thousands of survivors left without food or shelter.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called the quakes "the disaster of the century", acknowledging "shortcomings" after criticism of his government's response.

A first UN aid convoy crossed the border into rebel-held northwestern Syria on Thursday. The UN has released $25 million from its emergency fund to help kick-start the humanitarian response in Turkey and Syria.
