Kaohsiung voters will choose a new mayor on Saturday.
After former presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu was ousted from the Kaohsiung Mayoral Office in a recall election, contenders from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) are seeking to replace him in a by-election held today.
As Kaohsiung is a traditional "green" DPP stronghold, Chen Chi-mai of the DPP is widely favored to win. He faces Jane Lee of the KMT and Wu Yi-jheng of the TPP.
Jane Lee spent the latter part of the campaign dogged by a plagiarism scandal. Her master's thesis was allegedly over 96% lifted from other sources.
Wu Yi-jheng of the TPP, currently the country's most powerful third party, is a dark-horse candidate to place in second. This would elevate the profile of a party only founded in 2019 by Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je.
