Modi calls for diplomatic solution in Ukraine visit; Biden announces new US aid

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his first visit to Kyiv on Friday to again call for a diplomatic solution to more than two years of war with Russia. Also on Friday, the US announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, including air defence missiles, ammunition and mobile rocket systems. Read our blog to see how the day's events unfolded.

  • Russia suspended a ferry service operating between southern Russia and annexed Crimea after a Ukrainian attack on a Black Sea port on Thursday, Russia's transport ministry said.

  • Ukraine's forces destroyed 14 out of 16 Russian attack drones launched overnight, Ukraine's Air Force said.

Yesterday's key developments: 

  • Zelensky said he went to border areas in the Sumy region, just across the frontier from Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops are staging an unprecedented offensive.  
  • Russian forces mounted 53 attacks on enemy positions on the Pokrovsk front in eastern Ukraine as Moscow pressed to take a strategic town, Ukraine’s military said. 

  • Ukraine sank a Russian ferry carrying fuel tanks in an aerial attack on a Russian port next to the annexed Crimean peninsula, Russian officials said. 

  • Moscow said it had foiled several Ukrainian drone and missile attacks in the west of the country, including in the Volgograd region, where local authorities said a fire had broken out at a military facility.
