Max Verstappen wins behind safety car, Oscar Piastri scores his first championship points

Max Verstappen has won a chaotic Australian Grand Prix, which was stopped three times and ended under the safety car, while Oscar Piastri scored his maiden world championship points.

The red flag was brought out three times in Melbourne, with the final two stoppages coming in the final five laps of the race.

A full-race re-start happened with two laps to go, which then led to multiple cars crashing and being knocked out.

For the third and final re-start, which was completed under the safety car, the grid order was reverted to before the multiple crashes — without the cars that could not make it back on track.

This promoted Piastri to eighth. He also benefited from a five-second penalty to Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who was punished for a previous crash.

It is the first time Piastri has scored points in Formula 1.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso drove brilliant races to finish second and third, respectively.

Verstappen said he was unsure about the multiple red flags in the race, but highlighted the positives for Red Bull over the weekend.

"It was a bit of a mess, but we had good pace and we won, so that's important," he said.

"It's great to win here, my first win [here] as well."

Mercedes driver George Russell got the perfect start and led after the first corner.

Hamilton then overtook Verstappen to move into second.

The first red flag of the race came out on lap 9, following a crash from the Williams of Alex Albon.

Initially, a safety car was called, with Russell electing to pit.

However, the red flag meant all other cars were able to change tyres, without needing to pit.

Russell was demoted to seventh, then started making his way back up the order.

However, his car shut down on lap 18, ending his race.

Meanwhile, his teammate Lewis Hamilton could not hold off Verstappen for the lead, but managed to survive the chaos to finish second.

"I didn't expect to be second so I'm super grateful for it," he said.

"I still feel uncomfortable in the car though. I'm driving as best I can and working as hard as I can but, still, considering we've been down on performance and in straight pace, for us to be up there fighting with Aston [Martin] is amazing."

Fernando Alonso gives his thoughts on a great day for Aston Martin

By Michael Doyle

"We had a rollercoaster of emotions today, many things going on at the beginning, and the last half an hour! Mercedes were very fast and Lewis did an incredible job — I could not match the pace, but we'll take P3. The first red flag helped us get places for three, the second one didn't help. P3, P4 for the team is an amazing Sunday."

Lewis Hamilton discusses his race

By Michael Doyle

"Unlucky for George [Russell] today, really unfortunate. I didn't expect to be second so I'm super grateful for it. I still feel uncomfortable in the car though, I'm driving as best I can and working as hard as I can but still, considering we've been down on performance and in straight pace, for us to be up there fighting with Aston [Martin] is amazing. We can close that gap — it's going to be tough but not impossible."

Max Verstappen on his victory

By Michael Doyle

"We had a very poor start, lap 1. I was careful as I had a lot to lose. After that, the pace of the car was quick. With these red flags, I don't know, I don't really understand. It was a bit of a mess but we had good pace and we won, so that's important. It's great to win here, my first win [here] as well."

It is the magic of Formula 1

I looked away from the TV for ten seconds, suddenly 5 cars are out and there’s ANOTHER red flag. Utter insanity in Melbourne.

Carlos Sainz has been given a 5-second penalty

Key Event

The remaining Ferrari driver has been given a 5-second penalty.

That means if all the cars behind him finish with 5 seconds, they will all overtake the Spaniard.

The penalty is for crashing into Fernando Alonso after the previous re-start.

Key Event

The cars are being made to go out and finish under the safety car.

They are going back to the order they were in for the previous re-start.

But both Alpine cars cannot make the grid.

They are out, which means Oscar Piastri will finish ninth,

Oscar Piastri will score two world championship points.

Fantastic.

The cars could go out behind the safety car

By Michael Doyle

At the moment, the race has been stopped on the 58th and final lap.

They have not finished that lap.

So there is a possibility that the cars are made to go out behind the safety car to complete the final lap.

If they do that, the order the cars are in now would be the finishing order.

There are no drivers in cars. There will be no more racing

But we have no idea what the order is.

The only thing we do know is that Max Verstappen will win and Lewis Hamilton will be second.

Max Verstappen will win, but the rest of the order is uncertain

By Michael Doyle

Ok.

If the cars went through the first sector, they will refer back to the order of the re-start.

If they decide they went through the first sector, then the Aston Martin cars are out.

McLaren will finish sixth (Norris) and seventh (Piastri).
