WWE's Liv Morgan on Vince McMahon's departure, Triple H's new creative role and being a defending champion

It's been a busy week in WWE behind the camera, with chairman Vince McMahon announcing his retirement and departure from the firm after 40 years shortly before Friday's Smackdown taping, a move which itself came just days after the announcement of Paul 'Triple H' Levesque's return as Executive Vice President for Talent Relations.

Minutes before The Mirror's interview with Liv Morgan, Fightful.com broke the news that Triple H would also be taking over as Head of Creative.

As a graduate of the NXT black and gold era overseen by Levesque as a proving ground for many of the best-loved technical wrestlers on the current roster, Morgan's response was unequivocal: "We're excited. We're in great hands."

The 28-year-old champion, had a literal ringside seat to the upheaval of McMahon's shock departure, performing on the Smackdown show just hours after the announcement, where WWE's new chairwoman and co-CEO, Vince McMahon's daughter Stephanie, came out and led the crowd in 'thank you Vince' chants.

Morgan said: "We were all shocked. And it felt sudden. But we all owe so much to Vince. So if he felt like it was time, then it was time. We're also excited to be working with Stephanie and Nick [Khan, the other co-CEO). Stephanie was born into this business, so there's literally no one better for the job than her.

"We're all so excited and we're just ready to go to work. We're all just ready to take it to the next level."

There won't be long before fans and critics alike can see what this next level looks like, with SummerSlam due to take place on Saturday from the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. UK fans can watch the show live on BT Sport from 1am on Sunday morning.

For fan favourite Morgan it is the first pay-per-view defence of her title, after a surprise win at WWE's Money in the Bank.

In a world where, so often, winners carry the iconic briefcase round with them for months before cashing it in for their title shot, she instead handed it back little more than an hour after winning it, taking advantage of a battered Ronda Rousey to get her hands on a long-awaited championship.

The title win was the culmination of a life-long dream. Morgan said: "It was breath-taking to do something that I've been working my whole entire life for. It was fulfilling and just weird at the same time.

"The response from the fans and seeing how excited and happy they were just meant so much to me. I really wanted to give them something to believe in and I feel like throughout my career sometimes the fans believed in me so much when I felt like I wasn't giving them anything to believe in. So I really wanted to do that for them.

"My first ever accolade, my first ever big win. So it was just incredible."

Morgan will face Ronda Rousey at the event and, while the former UFC champion congratulated her successor in a sporting gesture immediately following her defeat, it's fair to say she's gunning for her now.

Morgan is aware the rematch is likely to be a brutal one: "I'm starting at the top. It's the most important match in my entire career and I know it's gonna be the fight of my life. So I'm just preparing myself to be willing and ready to do whatever it takes to keep my championship and to hopefully defend it at Clash at the Castle."

Morgan is looking not just one match ahead but long-term with her title reign but you won't catch her naming her dream opponent at the long-anticipated Welsh event: "I don't have my sights set on anyone. But I do know that I will welcome with open arms anyone that thinks that they're willing to fight harder for this than I am. They can challenge me, whenever, however, they'd like and want.

"I'm going to be a reigning, defending champion, as corny as that sounds. I'll wrestle anyone that wants it as bad as I do."

Clash at the Castle, the UK's first WWE pay-per-view stadium event since Davey Boy Smith beat Bret Hart at SummerSlam '92, will take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on September 3. Tickets for the event, which it is rumoured will see British superstar Drew McIntyre take on Roman Reigns, are available here.

Meanwhile, tickets for an October WWE Live Glasgow show likely to give home town boy McIntyre a hero's welcome whether he has the title or not, go on pre-sale today and general sale tomorrow.
