LIV Golf releases brutal 17-word statement after Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy announcement

The war of words between PGA Tour members and their rival LIV Golf counterparts continues as plans for a rival team competition were launched by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

The sport's stars are behind a new competition called TGL - which will see six teams each consisting of three players playing in 15 Monday night events. Events will take less than two hours to complete in a direct rival to the LIV Golf series.

In response to their rival's plans a short statement from LIV Golf, via Alan Shipnuck, said: “LIV Golf is clearly the best thing that’s ever happened to help the careers of professional golfers.”

Both McIlroy and Woods have been vocal opponents of the LIV Golf Series in recent months and led the PGA Tour's fight back against the rebel series. The pair have formed a new company TMRW Sports which says it will feature “progressive approaches to sports, media, and entertainment”.

Meanwhile, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has announced LIV golfers wanting to his rejuvenated Tour will be unable to.

Woods and McIlroy are already signed up to their new-look league starting in January 2024 which will be in direct competition with the LIV Golf offering. "I just think it's going to be a really cool concept," said McIlroy. "Tiger and I are incredibly excited."

Former world number one Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson are amongst those LIV Golf rebels who will compete in the series which continues in Boston next Friday (September 2).

Former US Open champion Patrick Reed has joined the LIV Golf series and believes those signed up are doing so for competitive reasons not financial, despite earning £50million after joining the series in June.

With 48 players split into 12 teams there is no cut in LIV Golf events with everybody completing the 54 holes, over three rounds, with individual and team competitions. With all golfers starting simultaneously as part of a shotgun system Reed believes that everybody having the same amount of rest between rounds makes for a fairer event.
