The prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize has been bestowed upon Liu Jiakun of China for his outstanding contributions to the field of architecture. Liu, based in Chengdu in China’s Sichuan region, has been recognized for his commitment to creating architecture that enhances the lives of ordinary citizens.

Describing his architectural philosophy, Liu emphasizes the importance of creating beautiful, just, and dignified living environments that cater to both commercial and human needs. His work is praised for harmonizing cultural, historical, emotional, and social dimensions to forge communities, inspire compassion, and elevate the human spirit.

Liu is known for his innovative approach to designing public spaces in densely populated cities, striking a balance between density and open space. Notable projects include the West Village in Chengdu, which features a mix of cultural, recreational, and business activities within a compact urban setting.

Another standout project is the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute Department of Sculpture in Chongqing, where Liu maximized space by extending upper levels outward to optimize a narrow footprint.

In an interview, Liu expressed his preference for a methodological and strategic approach to architecture over a strong personal style. He aims to adapt his designs to local conditions, blending traditional Chinese architectural heritage with modern technology.

Addressing the rapid urban development driven by capital interests, Liu advocates for preserving public spaces to ensure positive and healthy city growth. He believes that balancing commercial imperatives with civic concerns is essential for sustainable urban development.

As the 54th laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Liu will receive a $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion. Despite the prestigious honor, Liu remains focused on maintaining normalcy and freedom in his work, expressing a desire to avoid excessive pressure and busyness that may detract from his creative process.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize, often likened to the Nobel Prize in architecture, continues to celebrate visionary architects like Liu Jiakun who push the boundaries of design and urban planning.
