Perrie Edwards has revealed she became “homeless” after her relationship with Zayn Malik came to an end last year.
Edwards and the former One Direction singer are thought to have started dating in early 2012 and became engaged in 2013. It wasn’t until August 2015 that Malik’s representative confirmed the couple had ended their engagement.
Writing in Little Mix’s new book Our World, the 23-year-old said it was massively “stressful” being left with nowhere to live after breaking up with her partner and described how she cried every day for a period of time.
“Being in Little Mix has totally changed my life. I’ve got a place of my own now and I’m busy putting my stamp on it, which feels amazing, although it all happened in a bit of a rush, in 2015,” Edwards wrote.
“After I split with my partner, out of the blue, I had nowhere to go, which was incredibly stressful. For a while I had no idea what to do.”
She said her fellow bandmates offered to put her up but they did not have much room and she was not able to rent because she had cats and dogs.
“At the time we were promoting Black Magic, and while I was in America, things really hit me and I panicked. I realised I was homeless. I was crying every day, dreading coming back.”
Her mother then got in touch with her manager Sam after growing worried about Edwards because she was in “such a state”.
“I told her I was stressed because I didn’t know what I should do about where to live once I got back to England,” she recounted in the book.
But fortunately, her mother Debbie and her management team arranged for the singer to stay in the guest cottage of Modest Management owner Richard Griffiths.
“Thank God for him. I put all my stuff in storage, took my dogs and more or less lived out of a suitcase for a good month and a half.”
Edwards then started viewing houses and bought her own place, explaining that while she was initially terrified to sign the contract, she felt “proud and independent” once she finally did it.
A representative for comment for Malik did not immediately respond to request for comment.
