Little Mermaid fans in tears as Disney drops new trailer for live-action remake

The incredible new trailer for The Little Mermaid has made fans incredibly emotional as they await the release of the highly-anticipated movie.

Disney's live-action remake of the classic story has already captured fans' hearts when a first look was dropped last year.

And now, at this year's Academy Awards, the first official trailer premiered and it was dazzling.

Halle Bailey, 22, stars as Ariel and the singer introduced the two-and-a-half-minute-long trailer to the audience at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday evening.

Melissa McCarthy, who stars as Ursula, was by her side at the biggest night in Hollywood.

The trailer starts with Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, being saved by Ariel after his ship crashes at sea during a terrifying storm.

Viewers are finally introduced to Ursula, King Triton (Javier Bardem) and the one and only Sebastian (voiced by Daveed Diggs).

At one point during the trailer, Ariel finally gets transformed into a human as she gets to know Prince Eric while learning how to live as a different species.

The audience also got a proper look at the colourful and extraordinary underwater world that Ariel calls home.

After watching the trailer, fans rushed to social media to share their emotions about the upcoming film - due to be released on May 26.

"Ngl almost cried when she started singing," one user said about the snippet of Part Of Your World being sung.

Another person added: "Ok but why did this make me emotional," while one fan said: "How freaking exciting. I have that same nostalgic feeling younger me experienced watching the original."

"i died. im literally tweeting from my watery grave. #LittleMermaid trailer killed me," one excited fan said.

The Little Mermaid remake is directed by Rob Marshall, with a screenplay by Jane Goldman and David Magee.

The new adaptation will once again see Ariel fall for a human prince who lives above the water, with her hopes of love being put at risk thanks to a devilish plot from Ursula.

Broadway icon Lin-Manuel Miranda has teamed up with the original animated film's composer, Alan Menken, on the music.

Disney first announced Halle would be taking on the role of Ariel in July 2019. She said she has experienced racism after the casting was announced.
