Police are clamping down on drivers using a restricted road in Irvine town centre.
Locals have flagged concerns about motorists using High Street and Bank Street as a shortcut through the town.
Long-standing road rules prohibit certain vehicles from using the route during specific times of the day.
Essentially, only buses, taxis, disabled persons who are accessing or exiting from a designated disabled parking bay, servicing vehicles and cycles can be used on the two roads between 7am and 7pm every day. So almost all cars are banned from using the road during this 12-hour period.
Officers are now actively monitoring the area and prohibited vehicles caught using the road could be stung with a £50 fine.
An Ayrshire Police Division post reads: "Communities in North Ayrshire have told us they were concerned about prohibited vehicles using Irvine town as a means of a shortcut.
Local officers are providing extra attention to the area - and would like to remind everyone that using a prohibited vehicle on a restricted road is subject to a £50, non-endorseable fine."
"Monday to Sunday 7am to 7pm only: High Street (South), Irvine - from its junction with Kirkgate to the junction with Bank Street
"Monday to Sunday 7am to 7pm only: Bank Street, Irvine - from its junction with High Street (South) to its junction with East Road.
"The length of road stated may only be used by buses, taxis, disabled persons who are accessing or exiting from a designated disabled parking bay, servicing vehicles and cycles."
Motorists appreciated the clarification from police with some drivers seemingly unaware of the restrictions.
One driver said: "Thanks for highlighting this. I actually thought you could go through and turn right."
