Lithuania's president emphasized the importance of Kyiv's participation in securing an end to the fighting in Ukraine. President Gitanas Nauseda expressed concerns that a settlement without proper deterrent measures could allow Russia to strengthen its military capabilities for future aggression in the region.
Nauseda highlighted the need for increased defense spending by regional countries to prevent potential Russian threats. He warned that Russia might exploit any ceasefire to consolidate forces and prepare for further aggression, posing a risk not only to Ukraine but also to Baltic countries like Lithuania.
Lithuania, having been under Soviet occupation until 1990, remains wary of Russia's actions and its proximity to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus. Nauseda stressed the ongoing threat posed by Russia and the necessity for precautionary measures to prevent potential attacks.
Defense Spending and NATO Commitments
Lithuania recently committed to raising its defense spending to at least 5% of its national economic output, in line with U.S. President Donald Trump's call for NATO members to increase defense budgets. Trump's stance on defense spending has raised concerns among European countries, but Lithuania views it as essential for regional security.
Nauseda emphasized the importance of involving Kyiv in ceasefire negotiations and rejected any peace agreements made without Ukraine's participation. He underscored Ukraine's sacrifices in the conflict and the need for the Ukrainian people to have a say in determining the terms of peace.
Security Concerns in the Baltic Sea
Lithuania and the region face security challenges related to damaged undersea cables and gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. NATO launched the 'Baltic Sentry' mission to protect vital underwater infrastructure following multiple incidents of cable damage. Nauseda called for increased surveillance in the Baltic Sea to prevent further incidents and ensure regional security.
Despite objections from some politicians, Nauseda stressed the importance of Lithuania taking responsibility for its defense as a frontline country. He emphasized the need for increased defense spending to demonstrate the country's commitment to its security.
