List of restaurants in Wales given Michelin stars in 2022 Guide

Six Welsh restaurants have been given Michelin stars in the latest Guide.

The stars are considered the most prestigious award in the food industry - coveted by chefs and restaurant owners.

In Wales this year five restaurants received the one star accolade and the nation celebrated its first ever two star site.

There was also one Green Star - retained by Henry Robertson Dining Room at Pale Hall near Bala,

Two Stars

Ynyshir, Machynlleth

Ynyshir Restaurant and Rooms (Richard Swingler)

Ynynhir, near Machylleth, has developed into an award winning site under chef Gareth Ward.

The place now serves the most expensive menu in the UK at £300 for a 30 course feast.

The kitchen already held one star but has now been promoted to a two star restaurant - the first ever in Wales.

These restaurants gained a one Michelin star for the first time:

Aberyswyth's SY23

Aberyswyth's SY23 was opened in 2019 by co-owner and chef Nathan Davies, who is taking part in this year's Great British Menu programme on BBC Two.

It has won rave reviews since then and was recently added to the Michelin Guide for 2022.

The restaurant received another incredible accolade yesterday - taking the Opening of the Year Award across the whole of the UK.

Now it has been awarded a Michelin star.

Home, Penarth

Judges said: "Home is staffed almost exclusively by family members, with James Sommerin and his daughter Georgia working together in the open kitchen.

"It’s a surprise menu – if you can resist opening the envelope on your table – and the impeccable dishes make great use of Welsh produce. Expect an intimate and immersive experience."

These restaurants have retained their one Michelin star for another year.

Beach House, Oxwich, Glamorganshire

In one of the prime locations in Wales, overlooking Oxwich bay, the restaurant has earned a brilliant reputation for its food.

Head chef Hywel Griffith says he is passionate about local produce, sought from all over the Gower and Wales, boasting creativity and skill in each dish.

He tweeted this morning: "Amazing day for Welsh cuisine @MichelinGuideUK @BeacHouseOxwich."

Sosban and The Old Butchers, Menai Bridge

Named as one of the best restaurants in the UK as part of the Good Food Guide 2020, this restaurant run by Stephen and Bethan Stevens is located in what used to be a butcher's shop.

In the centre of Menai Bridge, on Anglesey, tables are released months ahead.

The restaurant has just 16 covers.

Judges said: "Owners Stephen and Bethan offer a culinary journey to a select number of guests at this relaxed, intimate restaurant in a rustic former butcher’s shop on the Isle of Anglesey.

"The surprise menu showcases locally sourced Welsh produce in original, boldly flavoured dishes. Sublime combinations are expertly balanced, demonstrating Stephen’s innate understanding of cooking techniques, while Bethan is a natural host, who gets the pace of the service spot on."

Sitting just a couple of miles from Abergavenny, The Walnut Tree has 20 tables and seats up to 70 diners.

It is run by one of the most experienced chefs in the industry Shaun Hill.

Michelin stars have followed Hill wherever he has worked.

Green Star

Pale Hall Hotel (Pale Hall Hotel)

Retained by Henry Robertson Dining Room at Pale Hall near Bala.

It recognises restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to sustainable practices.

Gareth Stevenson is head chef at the restaurant. Creating a menu using the very best that Wales can provide has been at the very core of every dish he creates.
