Lisandro Martinez told how his Man United arrival will impact Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane

New Manchester United signing Lisandro Martinez has been backed to help improve the performances of both Raphael Varane and club captain Harry Maguire.

The pair faced criticism for last season’s woes, with Maguire underwhelming and Varane constantly injured. Both are set to play important roles under Erik ten Hag.

Martinez, who won two Dutch titles with Ten Hag at Ajax, is a different type of defender to Maguire and Varane. While he is smaller in stature, he has more pace and his passing skills are superior to those of his defensive colleagues.

The Argentine is well-accustomed to Ten Hag’s playing style and will be used to offer a defensive outlet for United. Martinez’s ability to pick out a pass from central defence is something that former United hero Jaap Stam believes both Maguire and Varane will benefit from.

Speaking to Genting Casino, he said: “Martinez can help Varane and Maguire. We’ve seen that Varane and Maguire sometimes struggle to play out from the back and it's not always easy for them to do that, but I also think that they haven’t been helped by the players in front of them. “
